Ahmedabad — The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has approved a proposal to construct a new service road running parallel to the Ring Road in a bid to reduce persistent traffic congestion near Vaishnodevi Circle on the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar (SG) Highway.

The proposal will be included in the revised Khodiyar Town Planning (TP) Scheme 60, which is set to be forwarded to the Gujarat state government for final approval. The decision was taken during AUDA’s 309th board meeting held on Tuesday.

In addition to the service road plan, the board reviewed multiple other TP schemes aimed at boosting urban development in areas including Sanand, Muthiya–Bilasiya–Enasan, Sarkhej–Okaf–Fatehwadi–Sanathal, Kathwada–Bhuwaldi–Singarva, Sanathal and Mahemdavad. These schemes include provisions for improved public amenities.

AUDA also revised its plot leasing policy, now allowing open plots (excluding gardens) to be leased for one year without subleasing. Existing leases will continue until the end of their current terms.

The proposed service road is expected to improve traffic flow on one of Ahmedabad’s busiest corridors, which has seen rapid commercial and residential growth in recent years. Expert consultations and traffic management planning will continue as part of the detailed implementation process.

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with the tail number VT-ANB, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, heading for London Gatwick. Just half a minute into the flight, at an altitude of about 625 feet, the plane lost stability, veered off course, and tragically crashed into a student hostel at the B.J. Medical College complex in Meghaninagar. The impact created a massive fireball.

This blog writes about the incident and the events that followed thereafter.

Death Toll & Nationalities

There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Only one person survived: British-Indian national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11A. Sadly, both the flight crew—Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with over 8,200 hours of experience, and First Officer Clive Kunder, with around 1,100 hours—lost their lives. On the ground, at least 38 residents were killed, and over 60 were injured.

In total, the fatalities amount to approximately 279, which includes 241 from the flight and over 38 on the ground.

Passenger nationalities on board included: –

169 Indian

53 British

7 Portuguese

1 Canadian

What We Know So Far

The black boxes were recovered shortly after the crash by the AAIB. Rescue operations wrapped up in about four hours, with around 98 ambulances and more than 100 firefighters on the scene. A “green corridor” was established to transport victims to Civil Hospital. Initially, only 32 victims were identified through DNA, as the process was complicated by severe body damage.

The aircraft, delivered in 2013, had flown to Australia just days before this incident. This marked the first fatal crash of a Boeing 787 in history.

Among the many lives lost in the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI‑171 was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, a respected leader who served the state from 2016 to 2021. Rupani was reportedly traveling to London to visit his wife and daughter when the aircraft went down. His identity was confirmed through DNA testing, and his remains were handed over to his family. In honor of his legacy, the Gujarat government declared a one-day state mourning on June 16, 2025, with flags flown at half-mast and all official events suspended. A state funeral was held in his hometown of Rajkot, attended by top dignitaries including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Known for his quiet demeanor and humble approach to governance, Rupani’s sudden demise has left a profound void in Gujarat’s political landscape and sparked an outpouring of grief across the nation.

Pilot’s Experience & Final Moments

Captain Sabharwal was a seasoned pilot with over 8,200 flight hours and had also served as an instructor. First Officer Kunder, with about 1,100 hours, was relatively new to the role.

The crew issued a distress signal, a “Mayday,” as the aircraft struggled to maintain lift and stability. Reports indicate that Captain Sabharwal had plans to retire soon to spend time with his father, making this tragic flight his last.

Survivor’s Account (Seat 11A)

Survivor’s Account (Seat 11A) Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40 years old, had a miraculous escape and vividly remembers the chaos at seat 11A near an emergency exit.

He recounted hearing a “loud noise” followed by the cabin tilting sharply. His section broke away from the fuselage, and he managed to escape through a shattered exit, feeling disoriented and suffering from burns.

Eyewitnesses & Public Reaction

A 17-year-old named Aryan caught the crash on video while filming what he thought were just routine takeoffs.

Ravi Thakor, a cook from Hositan, lost family members in the tragedy and is holding onto hope for a “second miracle.”

Heartbreaking stories emerged about Hardik Avaiya and Vibhooti Patel, a newly-engaged couple from Leicester, as well as Pooja and Harshit Patel, both of whom tragically lost their lives.

Human Stories

“I realized I was alive,” Ramesh said, reflecting on his escape. “We had just gotten engaged… and just days later, they were gone,” remembered the Leicester couple, known for their kindness and community spirit.

Investigation & Next Steps

Investigative agencies from India’s AAIB, the UK’s AAIB, and the US NTSB are working together on the case. Preliminary inspections have led the DGCA to ground similar 787s for checks on engine systems, flaps, and fuel parameters. A timeline for the release of findings is expected, with the accident panel set to publish an interim report in about three months.

Final Thoughts & Prayers

The Ahmedabad crash stands as India’s deadliest aviation disaster in nearly three decades and marks the first fatal incident involving a Boeing 787. With 279 lives lost—both onboard and on the ground—it has sent shockwaves through the industry, families, and the nation. In the midst of sorrow and mourning, it’s crucial that investigations uncover the answers needed to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. May the victims rest in peace, and may their stories serve as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the pressing need for safety above all else.

As part of the Kalapur Railway Station redevelopment , the Ahmedabad city police commissioner has announced the closure of a major road leading to Kalupur railway station for a period of three years, from September 11, 2024, to September 10, 2027. A 200-meter stretch of the road from Sarangpur Circle to the station will be affected. One side of the road will be closed to traffic, while the opposite lane will function as a one-way route.

To mitigate traffic disruptions, the commissioner has suggested three alternative routes:

From Sarangpur Circle to Kalupur Railway Station: Vehicles should proceed via Sindhi Bazar and Panchkuva, then take a right turn towards the station’s entry gate. Traffic will follow this route and continue via Motimahal Hotel Road.

From Kalupur to Sarangpur, Raypur, Kankariya, and Gita Mandir: Vehicles should use the one-way lane on the Kalupur-Sarangpur road.

Access to the Kalupur Railway Station: The old entry gate will remain open for passengers, while a new footbridge and a 30-foot road, part of the station’s redevelopment project by Dineshchandra R Agrawal Company, will facilitate passenger movement on the western side.

Motorists are advised to use these alternative routes and plan accordingly during this period

The city of Ahmedabad is grappling with severe flooding as relentless heavy rains continue to batter the region. The Gujarat Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert, signaling the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall across several districts, including Ahmedabad. The situation has escalated rapidly, with significant waterlogging reported in various parts of the city, disrupting daily life and raising concerns among residents.

The orange alert indicates a high likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, which could lead to further disruptions, including waterlogging, traffic jams, and potential risks in low-lying areas. The government has activated emergency response teams to handle the situation, and citizens are advised to follow official guidelines to stay safe during this period.

This alert is part of a broader weather warning across Gujarat, as the state is expected to receive intense rainfall over the next few days.

Click here to get a detailed alert for this week

Current Rainfall Measures and Alerts

Over the past 24 hours, Ahmedabad has recorded substantial rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The meteorological department has warned of continued heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The orange alert, which is the second-highest level of warning, has been issued for Ahmedabad and several other districts, including Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot.

The state government has activated emergency response teams and has been coordinating with local authorities to manage the situation. Schools and colleges in the affected areas have been closed as a precautionary measure, and public transportation services have been significantly affected, with several routes either suspended or delayed due to waterlogged roads.

Impact on Ahmedabad

In Ahmedabad, low-lying areas have been the hardest hit, with several neighborhoods experiencing severe waterlogging. Reports indicate that some areas have recorded up to 10 inches of water, making roads impassable and forcing residents to remain indoors. Emergency services have been on high alert, responding to calls for assistance from stranded residents.

The Sabarmati River, which flows through Ahmedabad, is being closely monitored as water levels continue to rise due to the incessant rainfall. Authorities have been instructed to keep a close watch on the situation and take necessary actions to prevent any potential overflow that could exacerbate the flooding.

Statewide Preparedness and Response

The Gujarat government has taken proactive measures to handle the situation, deploying the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams to the most affected areas. Additionally, temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate those displaced by the flooding. The government has also issued advisories to fishermen along the Gujarat coast, urging them to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.

District collectors have been directed to ensure that all emergency protocols are in place, including the availability of boats and other rescue equipment. The state’s control room is operational 24/7, coordinating with local authorities and providing real-time updates to the public.

Community and Government Efforts

Residents of Ahmedabad have been advised to store essential supplies, such as food, water, and medicines, and to keep emergency kits ready. The government has also urged citizens to follow updates from official sources and avoid spreading rumors or unverified information.

In the face of these challenging conditions, community efforts have emerged, with volunteers assisting in distributing food and water to those in need. Social media platforms are being used to share information about safe routes, shelter locations, and areas to avoid.

Conclusion

As Ahmedabad continues to endure heavy rains, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. The orange alert serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by extreme weather conditions, and both government and community efforts are crucial in mitigating the impact of this ongoing situation.

The situation remains fluid, and residents are urged to stay tuned to official channels for the latest updates and to take all necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme weather.

In a welcoming move, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to address the traffic congestion caused by food vendors around Vastrapur Lake by relocating them to a newly planned food court within the lake premises. The original plan to build an amphitheatre has been scrapped to make way for this food court, a decision prompted by the frequent traffic jams created by vendors operating outside the lake.

Amphitheatre to be Demolished for Food Court

The standing committee’s decision comes as a response to growing criticism from the Opposition regarding the project’s escalating costs and delays, as well as pressure from the high court over traffic issues throughout the city. By converting the underutilized amphitheatre space into a food court, the AMC aims to solve two problems at once—easing traffic congestion and justifying the increased project costs.

The renovation of Vastrapur Lake, which began recently, has seen its budget swell from Rs 5 crore to Rs 8.2 crore due to delays. The work, which includes strengthening walls, installing lighting, and adding new amenities, is now expected to take another year to complete.

From Roadside to Vastrapur Lakeside

The numerous food stalls around Vastrapur Lake have long been a source of traffic congestion. Although these vendors were given space on a plot opposite the lake, many still spill onto the roads, exacerbating the traffic situation. Now, with the new plan, these stalls will be relocated to the lake area itself.

Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani explained that the amphitheatre, which sees very little use with only about 20 bookings a year, can be better utilized by converting it into a food court. The redesign will not only address traffic concerns but also make the space more functional for the community.

Renovation Details

The renovation project, which began after 20 years since the lake’s establishment in 2003, is being approached with a long-term vision, aiming for the new infrastructure to last another 20 years. The amphitheatre, covering an area of 5,580 square meters, will be replaced by 55 food stalls. Additionally, a 700 square meter dining area and toilet blocks will be constructed to accommodate visitors.

A History of Rebuilding

This is not the first time an amphitheatre has been repurposed in the city. The AMC previously constructed a tennis court in place of an amphitheatre near Memnagar Lake. Similarly, a theatre set up near another lake was demolished to make way for a tennis court. In another case, the lake in Bapunagar was filled in to create the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium.

The transformation of Vastrapur Lake is part of a broader trend in the city’s evolving urban landscape, where public spaces are continuously reimagined to meet changing needs and challenges.

These gates will highlight the city’s rich heritage and greet visitors with a touch of elegance.

Ahmedabad, recognized as a World Heritage City, is set to elevate its identity with the construction of impressive ‘City Entry Gates’ at seven major entry points, including Vaishnodevi, Sanathal, and Jashodanagar. These gates will be strategically positioned on key highways connecting to the city, as outlined in this year’s budget.

Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani announced that the gates will be built in coordination with the National Highway Authority, the Gujarat Government’s Road and Building Department, and AUDA. The design of the entry gates will be tailored to site conditions, with surrounding roads also receiving improvements.

The entry gates will feature eye-catching designs and decorative lighting to enhance their visual appeal. They will be equipped with connectivity to AMTS, BRTS, and the metro for commuter convenience. Additionally, a rooftop viewing gallery will be added to offer visitors panoramic views of the city.

The design will blend heritage and modern elements, with the surrounding areas incorporating decorative lighting, landscaping, and plantation to create an attractive environment.
