Ahmedabad: Water Hyacinth Infestation Disrupts Sabarmati River Front Activities

On Monday, the civic body released water from the Sabarmati River to lower its level in anticipation of heavy rain. However, a blanket of water hyacinth covered much of its surface, forcing the suspension of the popular floating restaurant on Tuesday. This unexpected development has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) cleaning efforts.

The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) spends Rs 48,000 daily to operate four skimmer machines. “The infestation of water hyacinth is largely due to heat, evaporation, and elevated levels of sewage and nutrients in the water. Together, these factors trigger the proliferation of hyacinth,” said a senior AMC official.

The extent of the problem is visible from Indira Bridge to Subhash Bridge, and between Vasna Barrage and Dadhichi Bridge in Vadaj, where large patches of the weed have covered the river’s surface.

“When the water level at Vasna Barrage exceeds 135 feet, it forces us to release water from the riverfront as surrounding areas may get waterlogged,” the AMC official added. “These factors force us to open the barrage gates during heavy rainfall, as was done on Monday when five gates were opened by 3 feet to maintain the water level at around 132 feet.”

“Water hyacinth has choked the river to such an extent that it will take us at least a month to clear it,” said another AMC official, pleading anonymity.

The Sabarmati’s plight is further complicated by the discharge of sewage into it, despite crores spent on purification efforts. Unauthorized drainage connections continue to contribute to the issue.

“We are studying alternative methods followed by other Indian cities to control this menace. At present, sewage being released into storm water lines that empty into the river is a major concern,” added the AMC official.

Ahmedabad Faces Surge in Cholera Cases Amid Monsoon Season

As the monsoon season unfolds, Ahmedabad is witnessing a significant rise in cholera cases. According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the city has reported 129 cases by July 6, a three-year high compared to 35 cases in 2022 and 95 in 2023, reflecting a 36% increase over the previous year.

The outbreak has predominantly affected the South Zone and East Zone, accounting for 77.5% of the cases. Amraiwadi is the worst-hit locality with 22 cases, followed by Lambha with 17, Indrapuri with 13, and Vatva and Ramol with 11 each. In the western areas, Ranip and Navrangpura have reported two cases each.

Health officials attribute the cholera outbreak to contaminated water or food, with water contamination posing a larger threat due to potential pipeline breakages. Illegal water connections and the use of borewells or shallow wells have exacerbated the situation. A senior official noted, “It is quite possible that the break in pipeline may have led to mixing of sewage water.”

The AMC has been proactive in identifying and repairing pipeline breakages, addressing around 60 instances in the past six months. Officials emphasized the importance of water purification methods to prevent waterborne diseases.

The cholera outbreak extends beyond Ahmedabad, affecting eight districts across Gujarat, including Gandhinagar and Anand. A recent high-level review meeting was held to assess the situation and develop region-specific strategies to mitigate further spread.

As the city grapples with this health crisis, the AMC continues to urge residents to use safe water sources and adopt preventive measures to curb the outbreak.
