Timba Tua Hot Springs and Temple

Located in the tranquil village of Timba in the Panchmahal district, about 25 km from the Garden Palace and 15 km from the city of Godhra, the Timba Tua hot springs are a fascinating natural wonder. These springs, known for their mysterious and varied temperatures, range from cool to lukewarm to boiling hot. They continuously gush out from several circular and square kunds (springs) within a large square tank. Legend has it that the flow began when Lord Ram shot an arrow into the ground to cure a sage of a skin disease.

The sulfuric water of these springs is believed to possess healing properties, attracting people with various medical conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, and skin problems. Adjacent to the springs is a historic Shiva temple, linked to the epic Mahabharata, where Bhim, one of the Pandavas, is said to have married the demoness Hidimba. Visitors can also see a pair of large footprints embedded in rock, traditionally believed to belong to Bhim.

Galtheshwar Temple

A short journey from Timba Tua brings you to the village of Sarnal, home to the exquisite Galtheshwar Shiva temple. This small but beautiful temple is situated on the banks of the confluence of the Mahisagar and Galta rivers. Built in the 12th century, the temple showcases the rare Malwa style of architecture with Chalukyan influences. Its outer walls are adorned with intricate floral and geometric designs, as well as sculptures of birds, animals, gods, and goddesses.

The temple is unique in that its shikhara (top) is missing, leaving it open to the sky. According to legend, Shiva himself was to build the temple overnight, but the rising sun prevented its completion. Despite some ongoing repair work, the temple remains a magnificent sight, especially during the Mahashivaratri festival when it attracts many devotees.
