ISRO chairman V Narayanan is all set to take over as ISRO Chairman
Dr. Narayanan is a celebrated expert in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. An alumnus of IIT and a pioneer in cryogenic engine development, he is often referred to as the “Rocket Man” who helped realize India’s lunar ambitions.
A Stellar Career in ISRO
Dr. Narayanan began his illustrious career at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1984. He was among the first scientists to delve into cryogenic engine technology, conducting groundbreaking research and experimental studies that enabled India to develop its own cryogenic engines.
Academic Achievements
- Dr. Narayanan completed his M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering and PhD in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He was awarded the Silver Medal for securing the top rank in his M.Tech program.
Key Contributions at ISRO
- Early Work in Solid Propulsion:
- Worked on the Sounding Rockets and Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) programs.
- Contributed significantly to the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) program at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
- Development of Cryogenic Engine Technology:
- Played a pivotal role in India’s indigenous development of cryogenic engines, overcoming technological denials by other nations.
- Innovative Engineering:
- Led efforts in process planning, process control, and the creation of ablative nozzle systems, composite motor cases, and composite igniter cases.
- Chandrayaan Mission Contributions:
- Chaired the Failure Analysis Committee for Chandrayaan-2, which provided crucial insights after the Vikram Lander crash.
- These efforts laid the groundwork for the success of Chandrayaan-3, where Vikram Lander safely touched down at Shiv Shakti Point.
Leadership Roles
Since 2018, Dr. Narayanan has served as the head of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Valiamala, Kerala. Under his leadership, LPSC has advanced in:
- Developing liquid, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion stages for launch vehicles.
- Creating chemical and electric propulsion systems for satellites.
- Designing control systems for launch vehicles and transducers for space system health monitoring.
Distinguished Positions
- Distinguished Scientist (APEX Scale) and the senior-most director at ISRO.
- Chairman of the Project Management Council-Space Transportation System (PMC-STS), overseeing all launch vehicle projects.
- Chairman of the Human Rated Certification Board (HRCB) for Gaganyaan, India’s first human spaceflight mission.
- Chairman of the Space Commission during his tenure as ISRO Chief.
Vision for ISRO
Upon his appointment as ISRO Chief, Dr. Narayanan stated, “We have a clear roadmap for India, and I hope to take ISRO to greater heights as we have great talent.” His leadership promises continued advancements in space exploration, innovation, and technology for India.
