Mecca: A severe heatwave in Mecca has led to the tragic deaths of six pilgrims from Gujarat during this year’s Hajj. The pilgrims succumbed to the extreme temperatures while performing the annual Islamic pilgrimage. Authorities have issued warnings about the heatwave, urging all pilgrims to take necessary precautions.

Among the deceased is Ikbal Ahmed Makrani (75), a retired government teacher who traveled with his wife, Sugrabibi (67), to Jeddah on May 31. Their son, Moin (36), who had accompanied his siblings to drop their parents off in Mumbai, last spoke with the couple on June 12, the day Ikbal passed away.

Local officials in Gujarat confirmed the deaths and expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased. Measures are being taken to support the affected families and ensure the safety of other pilgrims from the region.

The Hajj pilgrimage, which attracts millions of Muslims from around the world, has been particularly challenging this year due to the soaring temperatures. Health advisories emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.

The Indian government is coordinating with Saudi Arabian authorities to provide assistance and monitor the situation closely. Efforts are underway to prevent further casualties and provide relief to those affected by the heatwave.

This incident underscores the need for heightened safety measures during extreme weather conditions, especially during large gatherings like the Hajj.
