Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72 on September 12, 2024. He was undergoing treatment for an acute respiratory infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. Yechury had been admitted in late August and was in critical condition, receiving oxygen support in the ICU. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, his condition worsened, leading to his demise.
